March 2017 saw the return to Abernethy House to host the Pretenders Golf Association bi-annual tournament. The venue has become a favourite with members and will be the likely home for the first tournament of each year.

The day started with the assembling of the field at Stonebridge Golf Club. Expectation of a wet tournament were high and the wet weather gear was at the ready. Recent tournaments have seen some impressive accessories make an appearance. This year the highlight were the finger bras.

The draw this year had a new twist. As members were drawn out of the hat, they got to choose their group. An analysis of this proved that the person drawn last was given no choice. A complaint with the committee has been submitted.

The Calcutta draw was not without it’s dramas this year. This has become more than just a friendly wager between ‘friends’. The three big players: Czech Mafia, BDS and Soneq along with the other Secret syndicates and lone-wolf bidders saw threats of tanking and plenty of Dave Hester Style bidding up. A win in the Calcutta brings financial rewards and bragging rights for the next six months.

After the standard photo shoots with our guest photographer – Neville (Go fuck Yourselves) the Groundsman, handshakes and well wishes were exchanged and then……………….

The Pretenders March 2017 Tournament was in play.

DAY ONE

George Trovas with a well earned 40 points lead the way with James, Peter and Tim close behind. Group one, day one was a mix of shoulds, coulds and woulds. Peter the popular choice – said no one ever, George – no one but himself to beat, Tim – the boy from Cessnock going back to back and James – ALWAYS the bridesmaid. Group two with some chances, group three with some hope and group four with the injured and Wolverine like focus.

DAY TWO

The Pretenders assembled to watch the final group bring it home. All of us were focused on the body language but we all read it wrong. George looked positive – but always does. Tim looked every bit the winner – but was only scheming for next November, James looked happy with a spring in his step – no seriously, James looked happy with a spring in his step and Peter looked euphoric and confident – a look we’ve seen all too often.

The result – Peter Foltman – does it again.

A big thank-you goes out to the people that make these tournaments possible.

The committee members – Deo, Simon, Leo, Peter (did we forget anyone).

The catering executives – Nobby and George and their sous chef Carl.

Another Pretenders tournament. Another great time with friends.

November will be here before you know it – You could be Next!!!
